IONOS Review

IONOS Review

If you are building a new website finding a reliable web hosting provider is very important. There are a lot of web hosting providers and trying to find the one for you can be difficult. And one of them is IONOS.

Ionos currently has more than 12 million domains and works with around 8 million customers around the world. The company received a high ranking based on our ranking criteria due to its low price, unlimited storage, and positive reviews.

Ionos has one of the most affordable initial offers of any web hosting provider on the market, at $1 per month for the first year. They cover the majority of hosting options, including shared hosting, VPS hosting, WordPress hosting, cloud hosting, and more.

Ionos is an amazing web hosting service if you want a cheaper and a reliable option. With a monthly fee of $1, Ionos outperforms almost every other web hosting service. While many web hosting platforms have complicated pricing structures, Ionos’ is fairly simple: an initial price for the first year, followed by a fixed monthly price moving forward.

Let’s look a little deeper to see if 1&1 IONOS’ weaknesses outweigh its strengths, and whether another provider might be a better fit for you:

Because of its low cost, shared hosting is one of the most popular types of web hosting. With shared hosting, your website shares system resources (and thus the associated cost) with the many other websites that are also hosted on the same server. Shared hosting is not very powerful, but it is inexpensive. That is sometimes all that is required.

1&1 Ionos charges a standard monthly web hosting fee, but offers discounts if you sign up for multi-month or annual packages. You can choose a one-month plan with any package tier from 1&1 Ionos. This pricing method may have little (if any) impact on large businesses, but a budget-conscious blogger will appreciate 1&1 Ionos’ one-month basic web hosting option.

If you purchase a 12-month plan, the entry-level Essential package (starting at $4 per month) includes a free domain name. Essential costs $6 per month if you choose to renew on a monthly basis. With a per-month renewal, you lose the free domain, but Ionos offers a domain name add-on with private registration for a one-year introductory fee of $1. The Essential package also includes 10GB of storage, one email account, and ten databases, as well as the ability to handle approximately 50 visitors per minute on a single site.

VPS hosting is a level above shared hosting. It is a more powerful hosting option in which your site makes use of more server power. VPS hosting isn’t exactly cheap, but it’s also not prohibitively expensive. Because other sites that share the server take a big hit, you’re less likely to notice a slowdown (something that often happens with shared hosting).

1&1 Ionos’ cloud-powered VPS offerings (starting at a budget-friendly $2 per month for 512MB of RAM, 10GB of SSD storage, and unlimited data transfers) provide you with the tools you need to build a website that can withstand the rigours of the internet better than traditional shared web hosting. The Linux or Windows-based servers can be configured with up to 12GB of RAM and 240GB of storage using the top tier plan.

Cloud hosting is something 1&1 IONOS excels at. Its strength is its scalability; with eight different plans available, it’s simple to upgrade as needed. Begin with the Cloud M plan ($10/month), then progress to the Cloud Flex plan ($350/month) as traffic increases.

Pros and cons

Everything has its pros and cons and so does IONOS. IONOS got off to a fast start, delivering excellent uptime and speed results.

But what else do they excel at?

Let us take a closer look.

Pros

  • Strong uptime
  • Free SSL security
  • Free domain and email account
  • Amazing user interface
  • Good loading speed

cons

  • Account registration is not available in all the countries.
  • No free website transfers

Uptime indicates how much of the time a website is up and running, whereas downtime indicates how frequently sites go “down” and are inaccessible to visitors.

First and foremost, there is no such thing as 100% uptime. Because of updates and fixes, there will always be times when downtime is unavoidable. However, you want your provider’s uptime to be as close to perfect as possible.

1&1 IONOS has a high uptime rating. It claims to have “almost 100% uptime” on its website, and when we tested it, IONOS had 99.98% uptime.

Website speed is another important aspect, especially on mobile devices. If your site takes between one and three seconds to load on mobile, 32% of visitors will abandon it!

Page load times can make or break your website because visitors are impatient. It’s pointless to have great content if no one stays long enough to see it. 1&1 IONOS isn’t the fastest hosting provider in the world, but it’s also not the slowest.

1&1 IONOS has 15 data centers; unless you’re on a plan that allows you to choose your data center, you’ll be assigned to the one closest to you. The performance will differ depending on which of the 15 data centers is used.

We do, indeed.

Their flexible Linux and Windows plans are reasonably priced and include a wide range of useful features. This service is very secure thanks to SSL security, and we really liked that it comes with a free domain.

Furthermore, IONOS has provided consistent uptime and a faster loading time.

However, there are some drawbacks. Most European countries do not allow you to sign up with them, and the advertised $0.50/month pricing renews at a much higher $10.00/month.
